Change of Degree Objective (CODO)

The “Change of Degree Objective” (CODO) process allows engineering students at the Purdue West Lafayette campus who have completed all First-Year Engineering (FYE) requirements to apply for admission to the School of Mechanical Engineering. Students outside the College of Engineering must first CODO into First Year Engineering and complete those program requirements before admission into ME (FYE CODO information). CODOs are accepted based on enrollment capacity and meeting the minimum academic qualifications outlined below. As such, there are no guarantees of admission. CODO applications will be processed at the completion of the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.

CODO Initiation Process

Students thinking about changing their major, should start the process by reaching out to their current academic advisor for guidance.  The student needs to review the CODO requirements and ensure that they are on-track to complete those requirements and qualifications.  The CODO initiation begins with their current advisor initiating the CODO on behalf of the student.  This on-line CODO intuition must take place no later than finals week of each semester.  All CODO initiation requests will be held until after grades post for the semester and then transcripts will be provided to the ME Admissions Committee for review.  Transcripts will only be forwarded onto the committee if the minimum qualifications are met.   CODO initiations will not be accepted after finals week.  The student should not request a CODO initiation if they know they will not meet the minimum qualifications below.

Transcripts will be evaluated the week after final grades post for each of the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.  CODO applicants will be contacted by a ME advisor via their Purdue email account as to the status of their application no later than the week before classes begin for the CODOing semester.

CODO Qualifications

To be eligible for a CODO into the School of Mechanical Engineering, a student must have:

  1. successfully completed the FYE program requirements.
  2. take a minimum of 12 credit hours of professional engineering coursework (beyond the First-Year Engineering Program) for a letter grade on the Purdue West Lafayette campus in the CODOing semester.
  3. registered for a minimum of 15 credit hours in the CODOing semester to be considered.
  4. earned a minimum 3.4 GPA in all completed ME core courses (or engineering professional school course equivalencies)* (core GPA calculator)
  5. meet with a CODO advisor in ME to discuss program and CODO requirements before initiating the CODO with their current advisor.

Meeting these requirements does not guarantee admission into Mechanical Engineering (due to potential space and enrollment constraints), but is essential for consideration. Additionally, a student will NOT be accepted for CODO if he or she is on academic notice.
